One Direction DVD Watch Party

Currently happening in houses all around the world, and on Twitter with the hasttag #1DVDwatchparty

The fans were told to buy the live DVD, and then to press play at 5.30pm today UK time, and watch along with the band on Twitter.

The band are tweeting too:

Update - the stunt was so successful that many Directioners apparently had their accounts suspended for retweeting the hashtag too often over a set period of time.

Everything Re-Imagined

Lots of good charts in this presentation from Mary Meeker at KPCB:

100 British Columbia Moments - Giant Vending Machine

Vending is so hot right now.  Pretty blatantly stealing the 'Happiness Machine' idea from Coca Cola, the people at Tourism British Columbia placed this giant vending machine in San Francisco.  Generosity ensued, but all with the aim of making people think about what they could do in British Columbia - surf boards, mountain bikes and so on.

I'm guessing that it might re-appear somewhere...

Privacy warning notices

This warning has appeared on the FT, displayed the first time you visit the site.  It warns of cookies on the site, and if you dismiss the notice you are accepting that they can track your usage of the site.  It's in response to the new EU cookie directive becoming UK law.  I haven't seen any other examples this morning - but I'll post them if I do.

Update - The Sun has a much more minimal notice - a thin band along the bottom, saying "By continuing to use the site, you agree to the use of cookies. You can change this and find out more by following this link"

From looking at the screengrab below you can see how people could fail to notice it...

Asos and Starbucks promote together through Twitter

This is a fun little Twitter promotion, by Asos and Starbucks.

Starbucks are promoting this special offer on Frappuccino, between 3pm and 5pm today, using the promoted trend #FrappuccinoHappyHour.

However, if you are wearing anything by Asos (a client of my company) you can get the deal 2 hours earlier, just by showing your label:

Brilliantly done!

American Apparel Topless Ad

Did I miss a meeting?  Is this legal now?  You have to admit that it's eye-catching.

It clicks through to this global landing page

Google+ posts integrated into search results

This is a new one on me - and I can't find it for other brands so far.  If I search for Cadbury, which I have in my circles in Google+, I get G+ posts from them on the right hand side.

Detail:

I don't seem to get this for other brands in my circles on G+, for example Red Bull.

There's a case study here about the impact of Cadbury's work on Google+.

Update - Econsultancy has more examples here, including Asos and the FT

Real Juice Fruits for Camp Nectar

A fun stunt by colleagues at AGE Isobar in Brazil - they put moulds around some fruit on the tree, so that it would grow into the shape of a carton of Camp Nectar, complete with the logo.

More here.

Nike's Tunnels

Nike have come out with their summer football ads, featuring many of the players they sponsor.  Two years ago we had the 'Rooney/Beard, Ronaldo/Simpsons' ad, with lots of additional content; this year we have this epic, with lots of 'tunnels' to find.

Tunnels are clickable links within the film.  There are 9 in total, which you can click through to when you watch on YouTube.

This is just one example - a playable Sonic game:

Another is this film with Mario Balotelli getting a haircut, which has been uploaded by Nike as a stand alone film.

From that you can click through to Facebook to give yourself a classic footballer haircut.

You can see people watching the video time and again to try to find them all.

Hellmann's Recipe Receipt

A great case study from Brazil.  A partnership with a supermarket meant that if Hellmann's mayonnaise appeared on the till receipt, the supermarket would automatically print a recipe featuring Hellmann's and other items in the shopping basket.  This led to an increase in sales.

A great use of data, and a great retail example.

Enjoy The Dior

Dior make great use of digital media.  Previously they've done things like this with Guy Richie, and this with David Lynch; their latest uses Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode, and has had 17m views in a week.

Full 4 minute version on the Dior site or here on YouTube

It's a great track, and Depeche Mode are infeasibly huge, especially in Eastern Europe.  If you ever get the chance watch Jeremy Deller's film 'Our Hobby is Depeche Mode' which looks at the lives of passionate Depeche fans, largely from the old Soviet Union.

Extract below - a fan version of the original video for Enjoy The Silence:

Two examples of mobile interaction with TV

Both from this year, both very entertaining.

Red Bull created this app using Shazam to let you see the mountain from the skier's point of view.  It ran during their show Red Bull Signature Series on NBC.  There were 4 different clips to watch

Full info here

& the TV channel FX UK created this to let you play a game while watching the show The Waking Dead.

Seen any other good ones?

IKEA - Space to Rent

A very clever campaign from Australia.  They positioned distributing the catalogue as the catalogue looking for space to rent.  The monthly rent cheques that they sent around were fro things like "$25 off when you spend $150" which is a bit cheeky, but the idea and the execution in press, outdoor, and other media was very good.

Things I Love - Monday 7th May

Shit-Starter - collating some of the worst of KickStarter.  Lots of great examples of badly thought through projects.

Henry Rollins' open letter to young Americans.  "You must never lower yourself to the person you don't like"

(& if you like that, watch this)

Okayafrica Mixtapes.  This is just the first one, lots more to come.

Advice to young people who want to work in the music industry, from Digital Music News.  When I posted this on Twitter I got into a bit of a debate about whether jobs in the music industry were still worth trying for, but I think that there will always be interesting jobs, although not necessarily rewarding ones in the long term.  What I like most about the advice is the breakdown of side projects you can do to give yourself relevant experience.  The same applies for advertising and media - think about what you can do that will show off how you think.

Coldplay's tribute to MCA of the Beastie Boys.  It makes the song sound more like a Coldplay song, but it's a great cover version.

Dove's Facebook Ad Makeover

I'm not quite sure how this works...  Would Dove pay for all the ads?  Great idea anyway, and the 'teeth whitener & tummy tightener' ads are definitely overdue a kicking.

Prometheus Twitter TV Ad in Homeland

Sunday night saw a UK TV first, created by some colleagues in the UK for our client Fox to promote the film Prometheus.

When the first break came in Homeland, the Channel 4 announcer introduced a showing of the new trailer for Prometheus, and asked people to tweet reactions using the hashtag #areyouseeingthis

Then Homeland started again, for a comparatively long segment.  When the second ad break came, the first ad was tweeted reactions to the trailer shown 20 minutes earlier, taken from people using the hashtag.

Clearly all of the tweets shown were moderated - we all know how this works, and how it can be abused!

My photos aren't great, but you get the idea.  Really good stuff, and nice to see something done for the first time.

Zeebox were also involved - you could tweet when you used the service on the Homeland page, and Zeebox has been given an exclusive screening for 100 of its users, plus one would win the chance to go to the world premiere of the film, which is clearly a *great* prize.

Update - The Wall has some stats:

"According to Twitter on Sunday alone, there were 24,921 Tweets that mentioned #areyouseeingthis or Prometheus. And the promoted Tweet was retweeted more than 750 times.
According to a spokeswoman for Twitter:  “We love how they included Tweets in the creation of the TV content… using Twitter to impact the ending or content of a programme or ad is a huge opportunity that is just starting to be explored.”"

Mark Zuckerberg's first video on Viddy

Viddy is an app which lets you upload short video clips, and is being touted as possibly the next big thing.  As an endorsement Mark Zuckerberg is using it, which suggests it could grow very quickly.  As with Instagram it's all about mobile.

What's so appealing about these new platforms is that you don't have to get that many million people using, it, as long as what is produced can be shared through major platforms like Facebook and Twitter.  It seems to take ages to load at the moment, which suggests that they're seeing lots more traffic than they were expecting.

See more on Viddy here, including popular recent videos

Oh - and Disney used it for The Muppets

Nike+ Points Auction

Great stuff from Nike in Mexico, and a very natural extension to Nike+.

Runners who are registered with Nike+ can bid the miles that they've run on a special auction site.  The more you've run, the more you can bid.

From what I can understand from the film only one item is up for auction at any time - once that has been bought, another item comes up.  Items include watches and shoes.
